Otdam Souriya Orphan Home

The Otdam Souriya orphan home is located in the Takeo Province, just outside of the provincial capitol. This particular area was once the grounds of a small re-location camp for war victims and amputees. The Takeo province is also very famous for its zoo only about 2 hours outside of Phnom Penh.

The villagers of Otdam Souirya are mainly rice farmers and small vegetable farmers. Making the Takeo province the 3rd largest rice producing area. They are very hard workers and often times do not get enough nourishment in their diets. Lack of nutrition, combined with poor living conditions are the grounds for deadly diseases. The primary factor contributing to the growing population of orphans is AIDS. Many of the children lost one or both parents to this disease. Childbirth complications and diseases like TB are also frequent causes of children being orphaned in this district.

Every morning, the children from the home begin their day with a morning devotional. After the time of bible study, worship, and prayer, they eat breakfast. Some go to school in the morning, and others attend school after lunch. When the children are not in school, they might help with house chores, take a nap, or play. The children enjoy playing soccer, Cambodian games, and learning traditional dances. Everyday, the children study English at a class held in the home. After studying English, the kids participate in the evening devotional. They review their lessons before going to sleep.
