Puok Orphan Home
The Puok home is located in the Puok commune in the Siem Reap Province. Siem Reap is home to the ruins of Angkor Wat, Cambodia's best preserved temple in the entire region and one of the world's seventh ancient wonders. Just outside of the city near the home, most people who do not travel in town to work in the tourism industry stay in the village and try to generate a living producing rice noodles. The noodles are sold to those living in neighboring towns and villages. The majority of the villagers in Puok are very poor. They are very hard workers and often times do not get enough nourishment in their diets. Lack of nutrition, combined with poor living conditions are grounds for deadly diseases. The primary contributing factor to the growing population of orphans is AIDs. Many children have lost one or both parents to this disease. Childbirth complications and diseases like TB are also frequent causes of children being orphaned in this district. The children in the home start each day at five in the morning with devotions. Afterwards, they eat breakfast together. Some of the children go to school in the morning, and others attend class in the afternoon. When they are at home during the day, they help clean the home, attend English class, and relax. All the children are come home for lunch between 11:00 and 1:30pm. During that time, they eat, play, and maybe take a nap. Before dinner, many children play soccer or other traditional games. They finish the day with evening worship and devotions before going to sleep.
