To tourists, the Indonesian island of Bali is an exotic land of luxurious beaches and resorts with serene waters and picturesque tropical scenes—an ideal vacation. Bali is also a land of rich traditions, but there is also a stark reality behind this glamorous reputation. Bali is also a land of poverty and national conflict.
The 2005 Pacific tsunami earthquakes rocked Indonesia, destroying major cities and rural villages. Disasters, disease and death weakened the poor even more. The riots of East Timor caused more unrest, tearing families apart. Children languished in refugee camps and the streets, left alone to fend off the threats of danger, abduction and
malnutrition.
Mercy Denpasar Orphan home was established in 2005 as an answer to the hopelessness that these children faced. Many were flown from the refugee camps on the borders of Atambua to Denpasar in November 2005.
Although Denpasar is to be considered "Malaria-free", there was a Malaria outbreak in the camps so the children here continue to take malaria medication, due to contracting Malaria before their rescue. Dengue Fever outbreaks continue to occur.
Now these children have a chance for a hope-filled future, to grow up in a safe home with a caring and loving family. They can laugh, have fun and be regular kids again-- and this is a hope brighter than living in a land often called a "paradise."
Though we seem a world away, they pray regularly for those who help to support their home. They understand that the support of caring and compassionate folks continues to provide their home with a shining future.
Will you join us as we care for these children?
DAILY LIFE INFORMATION:
Each morning begins bright and early at 5AM, and all the children start with one hour of prayer, and then do housework until it's time for school in the morning. Many of the kids enjoy playing guitar and and some of the older kids are teaching the younger ones.
They return from school in the afternoon and study their homework before having dinner. At 7pm it's worship time, where they worship and share the Gospel on a rotating basis, and close the day by praying together. Bedtime is at 10PM sharp.
The Denpasar home parents are Yoppy and Tabita Maluta, both graduates of dMAKER school. They have compassionate servant hearts to see these
children grow up in God. Paulina, the assistant, helps to cook in the home.
