In September 1999 over 250,000 refugees arrived here from East Timor, after their vote for independence and the following violence and East Timor Riots. While the vast majority have returned, many have not. Many children in the refugee had either lost their parents due to the fighting or had become separated from them. While many children were eventually reunited with their parent(s) or relatives, some were not. The children at this home were rescued from the hopelessness and despair of the refugee camp situated on the border of Atambua.
They were brought into the Atambua Mercy home where they received the love and nurture every child needs to survive. Mercy Atambua was
established in 2005. The survivors of the violence that engulfed East Timor have a new life here in the Atambua home.
Each morning all the children gather and pray together for one hour before breakfast. Some of the children go to school in the morning and others in the afternoon. They help with household chores before dinner and in the evenings study their lessons. They close the day with singing and worshiping and praying together.
Currently, the Atambua home leaders are Nimrod Boi-Mau and his wife Yulie. Nimrod graduated from dMAKER school in Bali. Together they have a passionate heart for the ministry and discipleship of Indonesian children. Eva, the assistant, helps cook for the home.
