Medan

Mercy Home

The Medan Mercy Home is a home for the victims of the tsunami of December 26, 2004 and the Nias Island earthquake of March 28, 2005. The home was established 2005 after rescuing the children from Nias. They were evacuated directly to the home in Medan after the 2005 earthquake.

The Pastor of Mercy Medan, Pastor Ir. Boimim Sirait, MM, graduated from the University of the North Sumatra with an Engineering major. Yandri and Miwel Laning, the home parents, also direct the home. Both Yandri and Miwel used to be orphans and can understand the troubles of their children. They have been serving with Mercy Indonesia since graduating from high school.

Each morning starts at 5 am. All the children gather and pray together for one hour and do the scheduled housework. Some of the children go to school in the morning. Others go in the afternoon. In the evenings the children study their lessons after having dinner. At 7 pm they have worship and close the day by praying

together. All kids are in bed by 10 pm.

Most of the people of Medan are Christian, but in there are still many Medan villagers who still believe in animism.

There are also many people in Nias (where the children come from) who believe in animism. We found that there were children there who were given "magic" cloths or objects with the idea that it would protect them.
